Former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela says peace should be fought for by the people.
Yesterday, Madonsela received an honorary award at UKZNs Durban spring graduation yesterday.
The former public protector has always been known as the voice of the poor, women empowerment and fighting for a transformed justice system.
Mandonsela says the recent attacks on women, children and foreign nationals is depleting the chances of having peace in the country.
Meanwhile, UKZN chancellor Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng also condemned the recent spate of violence in the country.
He says the past of this country is now coming back to haunt those living in it.
